Short- to medium-distance migrant. Occidental stocks migrate to staging sites in Arizona and western Mexico, where they molt before proceeding to Central America—an unusual behavior for a songbird. Eastern individuals molt on the breeding grounds and move to southern Florida and certain Caribbean islands.
